"If you would understand anything, observe its beginning and its development."

-- Aristotle

The National Hockey Association sprang to life as a concept by longtime EHM user Shawn Stevenson. The name reflects an early 20th-century counterpart of the National Hockey League. The league was originally viewed as a 60-GM league with managers for both pro and farm level teams. However, discussions with other members of the community scuttled that idea quickly. It was June 2005 - and the NHL lockout was soon finally going to end. The time was ripe for a league - and the basic premise was similar to that of the NHL's re-launch. The game was going to be pure - no artifically overrated clones of GM's in the game, no ridiculously steroid enhanced draft classes.

Two longtime members of the community at large, Bob Menard and Chris Thiele, signed on board as co-commissioners, and the league opened its doors on June 29th, 2005. When the league started, there was no NHL season to base the entry draft order on. So prior to the NHL's adopting of the method, the NHA also decided to have a draft lottery to determine the order for the selections. It produced some unique results - with the Chicago BlackHawks winning the right to select Sidney Crosby. Quickly enough there was a burgeoning conflict - when a former league owner, who was running the Washington Capitals, expressed displeasure at the lottery system and in particular his team's drafting position. A rift quickly deepened when he lashed out at the league for allowing GM's to have hot chicks in their sigs. It ended when he resigned.

The first season was a roaring success and there was a Cinderella story in the 7th seed in the Western Conference, the Calgary Flames, bringing home the Cup. Season Two saw the Flyers win it all; and longtime co-commissioner Thiele resign for personal reasons. Doug Parker stepped up to the plate as co-commissioner, but quickly went AWOL. Menard's role shifted to draft manager. The next season saw Columbus win the Cup, and Derek Fludzinski sign on to co-commish. The Blue Jackets continued their hot streak in 2008-2009, winning the Cup again in an exciting contest against the young Washington Capitals.
